Looking for an in-house legal role that offers genuine variety, board-level exposure and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact?

Walker Lovell is partnering with an established international financial services group to appoint an experienced Legal Counsel to its Guernsey-based team.

This is an opportunity for a commercially minded lawyer who enjoys working across different areas of law, building relationships with senior stakeholders and providing practical advice that helps shape business decisions.

Reporting to the Group General Counsel, you'll advise subsidiary boards, support businesses across multiple jurisdictions and handle a varied mix of trust, corporate, commercial, regulatory and contentious matters.

You'll also have the opportunity to mentor junior colleagues and contribute to the development of a legal function that is investing in its people, processes and technology.

You don't need to be a specialist in every area. What matters is broad legal experience, sound commercial judgement and the confidence to advise across a varied range of matters.

What Makes This Opportunity Different?

  • Genuine variety: Work across multiple legal disciplines, business areas and jurisdictions rather than being confined to a narrow specialism.

  • Board-level exposure: Build relationships with senior decision-makers and become a trusted legal adviser to designated subsidiary boards.

  • Real influence: Play an active role in developing the legal function, improving processes and shaping how legal support is delivered.

  • A collaborative team: Work closely with an experienced Group General Counsel whilst mentoring and supporting junior colleagues.

  • Continued development: Broaden your expertise, explore new areas of law and access support for further professional qualifications, including STEP.

  • Long-term opportunity: Build a rewarding senior in-house career with meaningful responsibility and scope to make a lasting contribution.

What You'll Be Doing

Your responsibilities will be broad and varied, including:

  • Advising subsidiary boards and senior management on legal, fiduciary, regulatory and governance matters.

  • Providing practical legal advice across trust, corporate, commercial, insolvency and financial services matters.

  • Supporting contract reviews, negotiations and other commercial legal requirements.

  • Managing legal risk, complaints, professional indemnity matters and contentious issues, working with external advisers where appropriate.

  • Supporting legal matters involving multiple jurisdictions and collaborating with Compliance, Risk and other business functions.

  • Overseeing external legal advisers and helping manage legal expenditure.

  • Mentoring junior legal colleagues and reviewing their work.

  • Contributing to improvements in legal operations, matter management, processes and technology.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in speaking with well-rounded lawyers who combine strong technical ability with commercial awareness and sound judgement.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • At least six years' post-qualification experience, although overall experience and suitability will be considered.

  • A recognised legal qualification, preferably in Guernsey, Jersey, England and Wales, or an equivalent common law jurisdiction.

  • Experience across one or more relevant areas, such as trusts, corporate, commercial, regulatory, fiduciary or financial services law.

  • The confidence to advise senior stakeholders and communicate complex legal matters clearly.

  • A practical, solutions-focused approach to managing legal risk.

  • An interest in supporting and developing junior colleagues.

  • A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for working across a broad range of legal matters.

Knowledge of Guernsey trust law or the local regulatory environment would be particularly valuable, but you don't need to be a specialist in every area.

We're equally interested in hearing from experienced private practice lawyers considering a move in-house and existing in-house counsel seeking greater variety and responsibility.

Interested?

Whether you're an experienced in-house lawyer looking for a broader remit or a senior private practice lawyer considering your next step, this could be an excellent opportunity to develop your career.
